Surface treatments, particularly protective coatings, offer an effective strategy to limit ingress of aggressive agents and reduce maintenance and repair costs. This presentation reviews coating classifications and relevant code provisions, and highlights recent advances in nanocomposite coating systems developed by the author’s group. Emphasis is placed on laboratory and field evaluations of their performance against frost damage, chlorides, sulfates, carbonation, and acid attack.
