Description:
The 1st Workshop on Hydration Mechanisms and Characterization of Low Carbon Cements and Concrete, hosted by the SCiM group at UC Berkeley, is an intensive program designed for researchers and industry professionals. Led by Professors Franco Zunino and Karen Scrivener, the course addresses the urgent challenge of industry decarbonization by bridging fundamental materials science with sustainable infrastructure solutions. The curriculum covers the entire lifecycle of cementitious materials through several key modules: Cement Hydration & Chemistry: Exploring the complex processes governing material properties. Advanced Characterization: In-depth training on XRD, SEM/EDS/TEM, Isothermal Calorimetry, XRF, TGA, and PSD/SSA. Thermodynamic Modeling: Modeling phase assemblages and predicting material behavior. Sustainability: Focused sessions on sustainable concrete design and LC3 (Limestone Calcined Clay Cement) technology. By integrating academic rigor with practical applications, this workshop empowers the next generation of engineers to master advanced analytical tools and implement high-performance, low-carbon solutions in real-world construction.
